BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Lake Michigan College has announced that John Owens is joining the faculty at the College as the new full-time director of Music and music instructor. Owens has extensive experience teaching music at the high school, community college, and university levels in California, Arizona, Ohio, and the Navajo Nation. He has taught band, jazz band, percussion, orchestra, guitar, choir, and music theory.
His performances as a percussionist range from serving in the U.S. Army Band to playing for the Disneyland Resort in California. In addition, he has written 57 commissioned works for various ensembles in the United States and Europe.
Owens began his education at Fullerton Community College in California, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from California State University San Bernardino and a Master of Music in Music Education from Kent State University. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. in Music Education at Kent State University. He lives with his wife Christine, three sons (Milton, Quentin, and Pierce), and recently added baby girl, Beatrix.
