Skills You'll Need

Being a grape grower requires patience, an eye for detail, and a love of not only nature, but of science and technology, as well.  Good communication and math skills are required and often growers must also be bilingual in Spanish to accomplish their daily tasks.  Viticulturists must be:

  • Efficient time managers
  • In good physical shape
  • Detail oriented and observant
  • Adaptable
  • Good communicators
  • Capable with machinery and technology

It is important to note that a good working knowledge of how plants grow and function is a necessary skill for any job in horticulture. Growers must understand how nutrients are made available in the soil, how the plants choose to use the nutrients, and how those nutrients then affect plant growth and grape quality. This knowledge is used along with local climate, the ability to find and identify insect and disease pests, and how to manage them to grow excellent grapes.
