BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – The 2014 Lake Michigan College Radiologic Technology program graduates have selected Shawn Allen of Kalamazoo as its annual award recipient of the JRCERT Award of Excellence from among the 2014 program graduates.
The JRCERT award is provided annually by the Radiologic Technology program and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology. The award winner is selected by members of the graduating radiologic technology class on the basis of academic and clinical achievement, as well as on the classmates’ perception of the student’s professionalism and rapport.
Allen served for five years in the Marines as an airframe and hydraulics mechanic, including one tour in Iraq. He entered the radiologic technology field because he enjoys helping people and because of the various areas of specialty available after taking the radiography primary certification exam. He noted several of the post primary pathways such as, surgical imaging, interventional, magnetic resonance, computed tomography, bone densitometry, quality management, and radiologist assistant. He is currently working on his clinicals in Kalamazoo at Bronson Methodist Hospital in a surgical rotation. Allen has received academic recognition every semester he has attended LMC.
Allen says that he was “taken aback by” the award. “All of us have worked really hard to get here,” he added.
“Shawn Allen is a highly motivated student who demonstrates integrity in all he does,” stated LMC Radiologic Technology Instructor Kerry Mohney. “He conducts himself in a very calm manner that helps put those around him at ease. Shawn was determined to be a strong candidate for LMC’s first student in Bronson hospital’s surgical imaging rotation, and as a result he is establishing this rotation possibility for future students.”
Allen will receive his Associate in Applied Science - Radiologic Technology degree with High Honors during the May Commencement exercise on Sunday, May 4. He was raised in Allegan and is married with two children.
