BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Winner of eleven Tony Awards, Fiddler on the Roof will land on the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center Mainstage on Friday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m.
This widely appealing and touching show has won audiences’ hearts since 1965. Fiddler on the Roof, with its historical and ethnical storyline, reaches out to everyone with its fundamental theme of tradition that cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion. Only Fiddler on the Roof has magically woven music, dance, poignancy, and laughter into such an electrifying and unforgettable experience.
Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof has been lauded by critics again and again. Filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, which includes “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man,” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” Fiddler on the Roof is a timeless classic.
The story begins in 1905 in Russia where Tevye is attempting to live a normal life filled with Jewish traditions in a changing world. A humble milkman, Tevye is searching for appropriate husbands for his three eldest daughters - Tzeital, Hodel, and Chava. In a break of tradition, his daughters refuse to accept the wishes of the matchmaker, Yente, and their father. Instead, they wish to marry men that they love. Meanwhile, the Tsar has ordered that all Jews evacuate their homes and villagers begin their move away from Anatevka. Tevye is determined to start a better life in a new land, America.
