STEM Summer Robotics Camps at LMC Bertrand Crossing

May 6, 2014

NILES, MI – Lake Michigan College’s Bertrand Crossing Campus is offering summer robotics camps for the exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts. The series kicks off with training for adults who are interested in teaching robotics on June 21. Camps are available for students aged 7 and older.

Train the Trainer (for adults)
In this daylong seminar adult students receive hands-on experience with building and programming the LEGO® NXT robot and an introduction to other LEGO® curriculum including Simple Machines® and WeDo®. Competition opportunities will also be introduced, specifically FIRST® LEGO® League, FIRST® Tech Challenge, and VEX®. Attendees will have enough information at the end of the seminar to find the tools they need to start their own program. Lunch and snacks provided.

Date:                Saturday, June 21, 2014
Time:                8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Location:           Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing Campus, 1905 Foundation Drive in Niles
Cost:                 $125

Robotics Camps
In the robotics camps, students work to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms® (NXT) Robotics Invention System. Students will build their own robots and learn computer programming to control them. Some activities will involve partners, and participants are expected to cooperate and share well. Each day includes structured lessons and activities to practice construction and programming skills. Students need to bring their own sack lunch, and be motivated and mature enough to stay focused on activities. For students aged 9-14. Robotics I is offered twice and Robotics II once.

Date:                Robotics I: July 14 to 18, 2014

                        Robotics I: July 21 to 25, 2014

Robotics II: July 28 to August 1

Time:                9 am – 3 pm
Location:           Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing Campus, 1905 Foundation Drive in Niles
Cost:                 $250

Elementary LEGO WeDo Camp
Students will use LEGO® kits and computer programming to make machines that move. Gears, levers, motors, and machines of all kinds are discussed, all with step by step pictures. For students aged 7-8.

Date:                June 16 to 20
Time:                9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Location:           Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing Campus, 1905 Foundation Drive in Niles
Cost:                 $150

Introduction to Arduino
In this camp, students will be introduced to the world of digital electronics and physical computing by learning how to design, build, and program electronic circuits that are controlled by a microcomputer called an Arduino. All students will get to keep their Arduino and an assortment of electronic components ($100 value) at the end of the course for further experimentation on their own. Open to students middle school aged or older. The introduction class session is offered twice this summer.

Date:                Arduino: July 7 to 11, 2014

                        Arduino: August 4 to 8, 2014

Time:                9 am – 3 pm
Location:           Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing Campus, 1905 Foundation Drive in Niles
Cost:                 $400
