Skills You'll Need

student shows off her line drawing of a modelIn art, it is essential to understand the principles of form organization:

  • Line
  • Shape
  • Value
  • Space
  • Texture
  • Color
  • Balance
  • Proportion

These are the foundations that will allow you to explore your creative outlets. "Foundations are the foundations are the foundations," says Lake Michigan College program coordinator and instructor Ken Schaber. "Without the foundations of art, you have nothing."

Patience is necessary. Positive artistic reputations are not built overnight. As a successful artist, you must relate well to potential clients and be able to sell your art to the public. Determination and an unfailing belief in your art will help you make a living out of your passion.

Other skills and ability necessary for success include:

  • Imagination and creativity
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Work ethic
  • Flexibility
  • Comprehensive reading, writing, and editing skills
