Skills You'll Need

Being a horticulture grower requires patience, an eye for detail, and a love of not only nature, but for science and technology, as well. Good communication and math skills are required and often growers must also be bilingual in Spanish to accomplish their daily tasks. Horticulturists must be:

  • Efficient time managers
  • In good physical shape
  • Detail oriented and observant
  • Adaptable
  • Good communicators
  • Capable with technology

It is important to note that a good working knowledge of how plants grow and function is a necessary skill for any job in horticulture. Growers must understand how nutrients are made available in the soil, how the plants choose which ones to use, and how those nutrients then affect plant growth.  This knowledge is used along with local climate, the ability to find and identify insect and disease pests, and how to manage them to grow quality crops.
