Machine tool technology is advancing towards "higher forms of computer technology and getting away from stereotypical factory work," according to LMC program coordinator Ken Flowers. A degree in machine tool technology can lead to many industrial careers.
To be successful in machine tool technology, you need to:
The machine tool technology program at Lake Michigan College will start you on manual machines. This experience will equip you with the basic knowledge of machines. Armed with this knowledge, the transition to CNC machines is much easier and more fluid. The CNC machines found in LMC's lab are up to date, and typical of what is found in real work settings.
In addition to knowing how to operate manual and CNC machines, you will also need to understand applied mathematics, technical physics, manufacturing processes, and computer literacy.
