Skills You'll Need

Being a landscaper requires excellent listening skills, patience, an eye for detail, and a love of not only nature, but science and technology. Good communication and math skills are required and often landscapers must also be bilingual in Spanish to accomplish their daily tasks. Landscapers must be:

  • Good with plants
  • Efficient time managers
  • In good physical shape
  • Detail oriented and observant
  • Adaptable
  • Good communicators
  • Capable with machinery

It is important to note that a good working knowledge of plant identification is a must for landscaping professionals, as well as knowledge of how plants grow and function. Landscapers involved in plant maintenance must understand how nutrients are made available in the soil and how plants choose which nutrients to use, along with how those nutrients then affect plant growth. This knowledge is used along with local climate and the ability to find and identify insect and disease pests, and how to manage them to maintain quality landscapes.
