BENTON HARBOR, MI – Alec Brown of Niles is the newest player to sign a national letter of intent with the LMC basketball team for the 2013 season. Most recently named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Academic All-State, Brown has also earned 1st Team All Southwestern Michigan Conference, BCAM's Best Honorable Mention Class A, and Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-State Class A.
BCAM, Associated Press, Detroit News, and the Detroit Free Press awarded 47 Michigan student athletes the Academic All-State designation this year. Nominated by Niles coach Todd Pawielski, Brown also needed a 3.5 grade point average to qualify for the award and he graduated with a 3.86.
“Alec has established himself as the consummate student-athlete and an individual with high character, outstanding academic achievement, and athletic success,” stated LMC Men’s Basketball Coach Doug Schaffer. “Lake Michigan College is honored that he has chosen us to continue his journey and we are confident that he will continue the excellent tradition of Niles High School graduates who attend LMC and perform well in the class room and on the court.”
In his senior year, Brown averaged 20.7 points per game with a 20 game total of 414 points. His shooting percentages were 45 percent field goals, 35 percent 3 pointers and 68 percent free throws. His record also included 36 assists, 35 steals and 57 turnovers. Brown made headlines in a February game by leading the Vikings with 36 points to defeat South Bend Riley.
