BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Lake Michigan College’s cheer team and mascot, Rocky the Red Hawk, attended the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) College Spirit Camp in Wisconsin August 1 to August 4. The cheer team competed in the small coed division; over 40 colleges and universities participated in the cheer camp and Rocky was one of 80 mascots at camp.
The cheer team earned the following awards this year: the Leadership award, the Superior Trophy for Overall Performance, Most Improved Team, 3rd place in fight song, 3rd place in game day, 4th place in floor cheer, and 4th place in sideline cheer. “The Leadership award is voted on by each team in the division and only 1 team receives the award, which is a huge honor and reflects the character of the team members, not just their skill,” stated Pam McVay, LMC student life director and cheer team advisor, who accompanied the students to the camp. This is the 2nd year in a row that LMC has won the leadership award.
Rocky was presented the award for “Most Improved Mascot.” He also won two blue “Superior” ribbons for evaluations in character development and a red “Excellent” ribbon in the skit evaluation.
Universal Cheerleaders Association was founded in 1974 to provide high quality educational training for college and high school cheerleaders through summer camps and clinics on college campuses.
