BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Lake Michigan College Upward Bound student Shantel Booth is headed for a unique summer experience. Booth will leave on June 5 to attend the Upward Bound Summer Intensive Program at the University of Hawaii, Hilo, for six weeks.
Booth is a sophomore at Benton Harbor High School and has been in the College’s Upward Bound program for two years. She was selected to participate in the Summer Intensive Program because of her strong commitment to her academic achievement in her high school classes, and her commitment to the Upward Bound program, as demonstrated by her attendance and participation.
“I am scared and excited at the same time,” stated Booth. “I am so happy that there are no words to describe how I feel. I am excited about being in Hawaii and learning more about math and science because those are my favorite subjects.”
Upward Bound provides after-school academic advancement services and college prep sessions during the academic year and a six-week academic institute during the summer, both held on the LMC Napier Avenue Campus.
“Through collaboration with other Upward Bound programs, scholars can be selected to participate in residential summer programs at other colleges and universities across the country,” stated Selene Anderson, director of Upward Bound at LMC. “We are very excited that Shantel has the opportunity to explore another region and culture, while continuing to build her academic skills.”
Participants in the Summer Intensive Program will focus on math and chemistry taught by University of Hawaii professors. Participants are provided with in-class and evening tutor support and mentoring from accomplished college students who will assist them in being successful in the classroom. In addition to classroom work, Booth will have the opportunity to explore various islands and learn about Hawaiian culture.
Upward Bound is a pre-college program funded through the U.S. Department of Education and serves 65, 9-12 grade students attending Benton Harbor Area Schools. For more information about the Upward Bound program at LMC, contact Selene Anderson at (269) 927-7061.
