Strategic Issue
Teaching and Learning

How can LMC support and document excellence in teaching and learning?

Strategies:

  • Create and implement a student advising program that assists each student to declare a major, plan or change a career, or set an educational goal, increases retention and success, offers support while the student is at LMC, and ensures a smooth transition as the student exits the college.

  • Implement a program review process for all instructional programs, all academic disciplines and all student services that reflects the standards of the highest level of available accreditation, employs input from external content experts, so that each program keeps pace with innovations in each field.

  • Implement a College-wide process that encourages and supports the timely development of new or revised curricula that meet student, business or community needs in new or emerging career or educational fields.

  • Mandate professional and leadership development opportunities for faculty and student services personnel to ensure that all programs are effectively led, that they articulate with transfer institutions, that the transition to the workplace is seamless and efficient, and that research-based best practices form the basis of classroom pedagogy throughout LMC.

  • Identify and implement student core competencies such as diversity, globalization, innovation, accountability, and service across the curriculum.

  • Reward effective innovative teaching strategies and promote instructor and student accountability through identifying and measuring targeted student outcomes at the course, discipline and program level while maintaining flexibility in classroom practices to achieve those outcomes.

  • Create student life programs that link student academic and personal success with real world work experience and service to the College, the community and fellow students.

  • Implement new or revised transitional studies learning strategies based on the annual evaluation of students who advanced from transitional to regular academic programs.

  • Create and implement models and support systems to ensure that teaching, programs and professional development and service to students are core faculty responsibilities.

  • Encourage consistency of teaching excellence between full and adjunct faculty by implementing, and measuring the effectiveness of a faculty-mentoring program.
