Career Opportunities
and Work Life - Communication
Communication teaches interpersonal skills and how to work
with others. These skill sets are desirable in most professions.
Careers in communication will have you working with people
as the focus of the job. In business you will work with the
human resources, management, or sales departments.
Typical careers fields in Communication include:
- Public relations
- Advertising
- Business
- Sales
- Journalism
- Government
Many communication graduates continue onto law or graduate
school.
Work Environment
Many careers in communication require a standard 40-hour workweek.
If you enter business communication, you will likely work in
an office setting.
Careers in journalism and reporting have varying hours depending
on deadlines, and pending stories. Since news does not stop
at 5:00, you should expect to work beyond the standard 40-hour
workweek. Working weekends, evenings, and holidays are not uncommon.
Employment Outlook
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most communication
career areas are seeing a steady employment increase. Employment
in human resources is expected to see a 19 percent increase
by 2012, and advertising is expecting a 25 percent employment
increase by the same year.
