Skills You'll Need - Dentistry (pre)

A career in dentistry requires the ability to diagnose and treat patients. It is important for dentists to have excellent hand-eye coordination, along with the ability to judge space and shape.

To be successful in dentistry, you need to:

  • anticipate and meet the needs of patients
  • have the knowledge of principles and procedures
  • have good written and verbal communication skills
  • be able to pick up non-verbal cues and body language
  • understand good business practices

Dentophobia is the fear of dentists. This is a real and common phobia found in many patients and is an issue dentists face. As a dentist, it will be your responsibility to be conscious of this fear and respond to each patient on an individual and unique basis. You will have to be calming and confident in your abilities and the abilities of your staff.

Along with the high degree of manual precision, dentists also have to have a business background. If your goal is to be a solo practitioner, you must have good business sense, communication skills, and self-motivation.
