Career Descriptions - Electronics Technology

An electronics technician lays out, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs and modifies developmental and production electronic components, parts, equipment and systems. Systems include computer equipment, test equipment and machine tool numerical controls. By applying principles and theories of electronics, electrical circuitry, engineering mathematics, electronic and electrical testing, electronics technicians are able to assess and fix problems.

Field service technicians are responsible for maintenance, adjustment, troubleshooting and repairs of electronic/electrical machinery in industrial or commercial plants and laboratories. They diagnose problems using common troubleshooting techniques and advise customers how to properly maintain their equipment.

Manufacturing technicians help engineers to design, develop, test and manufacture industrial machinery, consumer products and other equipment. When planning production, they prepare layouts and drawings of the assembly process and of parts to be manufactured. They estimate labor costs, equipment life and work with engineers to eliminate production problems.

An electrical mechanic/installer diagnoses the cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of equipment and performs preventive maintenance on existing equipment. Electrical mechanic/installer may also test, adjust, or install electronic equipment, such as industrial controls, transmitters, and antennas.
