| The
Classroom Experience - Fire Science
You can prepare for a fire science career by completing the two-year
Fire Science degree, or one-year Fire Science certificate program
at Lake Michigan College and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The Fire Science program consists of lecture time in fire science-based
courses that will prepare you for exams, papers, and simulations.
|
|
The Fire Science program has a rigorous schedule and carries
with it a heavy academic load. LMC instructors will expect
you to have good task commitment. Since many of these classes
are introductory or general overviews, it is vital to your
academic success to attend and actively participate in every
class. Instructors are looking for dedication from students.
|
| Overall, the Fire Science courses offered at LMC will prepare
you to be successful in a fire department. LMC will provide
you with the broad science knowledge you will need to succeed
in higher-level courses or on-the-job tasks. |
Fire Science Consortium
Lake Michigan College is a member of a five-college Fire Science
Consortium with Glen Oaks Community College (GOCC), Kalamazoo
Valley Community College (KVCC), Kellogg Community College (KCC),
and Southwestern Michigan College (SMC). KVCC serves as the administrative
host for the program and awards all Fire Science certificates and
degrees.
The ability to offer Fire Science classes at multiple sites throughout
southwest Michigan makes the program more accessible. You also have
the financial benefit of paying Lake Michigan College tuition rates
regardless of which of the five schools at which you take classes.
Required general education classes can be taken at LMC, transferred
to KVCC and applied toward graduation. You will then finish the
major courses at KVCC. Contact a KVCC counselor for transferability
of classes from colleges other than GOCC, KVCC, KCC, LMC, and SMC.
You must apply for admission to KVCC prior to transferring transcripts
from other colleges. As you near graduation, you are strongly encouraged
to meet with a counselor at KVCC.
Program Prerequisites
Michigan or Indiana Firefighter II and Haz-Mat Operations certification
are prerequisites for FISC 110 - 212.
Technology in the Classroom
A variety of technologies are used in conjunction with traditional
lecture and hands-on activities. PowerPoint presentations, videos,
DVDs, the Internet and materials available on Blackboard - the
College's instructional Intranet - play an important role in class.
Getting the Most from the Program
By keeping in touch with your advisor, you can make sure you are
on track and if necessary, your plan can be revised to adjust
for any circumstances that may change your available time to complete
the program.
