Skills You'll Need - Foreign
Language
Lake Michigan College program coordinator Dr. K. Sundaram says
the goal of this program is "for you to walk away with a
better appreciation of a foreign language and the culture the
language originates from." By combining foreign language
with another professional program, wider employment opportunities
will arise.
No matter the occupation you pursue, common skills and abilities
will be needed such as:
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Mental dexterity
- Exceptional memory and retention
- Ability to work well individually and as part of a team
If your career is in business, other skills are needed to make
you a strong candidate for employment. The necessary skills and
abilities include:
- Creativity
- Ability to express thoughts clearly and simply
- Initiative
- Confidence in self and abilities
- Problem solving skills
A foreign language instructor must have:
- Motivation skills
- Creative lesson planning abilities
- Ability to adjust teaching techniques to fit students' needs
- Ability to balance research and class time
- The drive to be life long learners about language and culture
Interpreters and translators must have:
- Excellent writing skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to edit written documents
- Organization
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Fluency in multiple languages
