Career Opportunities & Work Life - Hospitality Management

According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, in the United States, tourism is currently the third largest retail industry, behind automotive and food stores. Travel and tourism industries are one of America's largest employers.

With an education in hospitality management, you have a wide variety of potential careers from which to choose in the hotel, restaurant, resort, and tourism industries.

Work Environment
Typical work settings are found in hotels, motels, resorts, hospitals, schools, universities, office buildings, health care facilities, and tourist attractions. Because many of these businesses are open seven days a week, you may work a flexible schedule that will include nights, weekends, or holidays. These positions can be full- or part-time.

Employment Outlook
Whether you decide to stay in the Michiana region or venture to new areas, your degree will move with you. With an increase in tourism and business travel, new hotels, motels, restaurants, and resorts have been built all over the United States.

In Michigan alone, the U.S. Department of Labor is predicting a state employment increase of 11 percent by the year 2012. Nationally, the outlook for employment is good with an anticipated increase in employment of 12 percent by 2012.
