You'll Need - Legal Office Systems
A legal office setting can be fast-paced. It requires good customer
service skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and strong
attention to detail and deadlines.
"People with the ability to multitask, communicate well
with people, and work effectively in a detail-oriented environment
have some of the key skills to be successful as a legal office
assistant," states LMC Legal Office Systems instructor and
advisor Lisa Augustiniak. "Area employers tell us over and
over that they are looking for people who not only can do the
technical aspects of the job but who possess the soft skills -
professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability
to work in a team environment."
Skills and knowledge you'll need to be successful include:
- Strong customer service abilities
- Clear verbal and written communication
- Flexibility to work as part of a team and independently
- Word processing, spreadsheet, database, and Internet computer
skills
- A knowledge and interest in law and government
- Legal terminology
- Transcription
- Keyboarding
- Record keeping and filing
- A strong sense of organization
