Career Opportunities
and Work Life - Medicine & Osteopathic Medicine (Pre)
A career in medicine offers a wide variety of professional opportunities.
There are two types of physicians: Doctor of Medicine (MD) and
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). While both MDs and DOs
may use drugs and surgery as methods of treatment, DOs place
an emphasis on the musculoskeletal system.
Physicians may work in one or more of the following
specialties:
Other specialists include: allergists, cardiologists, dermatologists,
gastroenterologists, and pathologists.
Work Environment
Whether working in neighborhood clinics, hospitals, private
practices, or schools, there is no standard work week. Long,
irregular hours are required often demanding more that the standard
40-hour work week. Often, physicians are on-call for emergencies.
While most physicians care for people in need, others are involved
in research. Many physicians work tirelessly developing new
treatments for cancer, AIDS, and other diseases and disorders.
Some physicians decide to go into academics, health maintenance
organizations, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers,
and insurance companies.
Employment Outlook
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of physicians
will grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through
2012. Due to an aging population and increased demand for medical
services, there is a high level of demand.
Nationally, family and general practitioners are expected to
see an employment increase of 19 percent, and in Michigan 16
percent by 2012.
