The Classroom Experience
- Music
Lake Michigan College's Music program gives you a strong foundation
in the music field. It is both academically and musically challenging
and will give you several opportunities each semester to demonstrate
your talent. Courses will give you background in music education,
vocal performance, composing, the recording industry, and music
therapy. These courses prepare you with the necessary information
to go onto any music program at a four-year school.
Entrance
into the Program
An audition is required to enter the program. At your audition,
you'll be asked to have perform two pieces. Pianists and vocalists
should memorize their music. If you audition vocally, the judges
will check your range. If you audition with an instrument, you
should be prepared to sight read and perform scales. These auditions
are held at different times through out the year, and most hear
results of their audition within a week or two. For more information
on the next round of auditions, email utroske@lakemichigancollege.edu
or call (269) 927-8100 ext. 5237.
Scholarships
The Lake Michigan College Music program has several special
scholarship opportunities.
To apply, contact the Performing Arts Office at (269) 927-8100
ext. 5237 or utroske@lakemichigancollege.edu and request a copy
of the application. Included with your completed and returned
application should be a letter of support that gives information
as to the student's character, seriousness of purpose, attitude,
musical preparation, and musical potential.
Music Coursework
During your two years at Lake Michigan College, you will take
four semesters of music theory, two semesters of music history,
and four semesters of sight singing and ear training. In whatever
aspect of music you choose to enter, these core classes will
give you the knowledge necessary to be successful. You will
also take applied lessons and participate in a large ensemble.
Whether you are interested in vocal, piano, or guitar lessons,
an LMC instructor will assist you in learning the techniques
required in your chosen profession.
Performance Opportunities
"The more you perform, the better your skills will be when
it is time to audition for a four-year college or university,"
states Dr. Elfie Berndt, LMC music program director.
Five student recitals are scheduled throughout the year. Studio
classes, studio recitals and master classes provide additional
performance opportunities. You can also participate in one or
more of the musical
ensembles on campus including:
All of these groups are open to music majors and general students
through audition and afford regular performance opportunities
in both on-campus and off-campus venues.
Getting the Most out of the Program
According to Dr. Berndt, if you are planning to study music
at the college level should prepare by taking piano lessons,
taking private lessons in your choice area of specialty, learn
basic music theory skills, and get as good as you possibly can.
Area high school students can also participate in the LMC High
School Honors Choir. Rehearsals are held during the fall semester
and the choir performs annually with the Southwest Symphony
Orchestra in their Holiday Festival Concert. Membership in the
choir is through the recommendation of the student's high school
choral director or by arranging an audition. For audition information
contact, Dan Hendrickson at hendrick@lakemichigancollege.edu
or (269) 927-6588.
Once in college, "students should take advantage of opportunities
to perform outside of the classroom whenever possible,"
states Dr. Berndt. "They should also practice a lot and
stay focused on their goal of moving on to a four-year schools
when they leave LMC."
