Skills You'll Need - Nursing

Nursing is a complex career field in that it couples human compassion with extensive medical and technological knowledge to provide an environment that promotes health and healing.

Nurses must embody:

  • Good judgment and decision making skills
  • A strong ability to address people's needs
  • Sensitivity
  • Effective verbal and written communication capabilities
  • Adaptability
  • A willingness to learn

They must also possess knowledge related to the anatomy of the human body; biological functions of organisms, their tissues, cells, and interaction with each other; and the chemistry of how medicines work and interact. Nurses must be able to recognize changes in symptoms and understand the principles of medical treatment.

To be successful, nurses must also be able to:

  • Work under pressure
  • Recognize non-verbal cues and body language
  • Anticipate the needs of their patients
  • Relate to a wide variety of people from children to doctors
