You'll Need - Radiologic Technology
The work radiological technologists do directly impacts the health
of others; sometimes it involves life and death situations. Because
of the level of responsibility that is a part of these careers,
radiologic technologists must be well-trained in all technical
aspects of the field as well as in areas such as anatomy, biology,
and medical terminology. In addition, operating complicated equipment
requires a level of mechanical and physical ability.
Radiologic technologists must be detail-oriented and able to
remain calm and focused during stressful times. Because so much
work is done with patients who are sick or injured, these professionals
must be sensitive to patients' physical and psychological needs.
"You'll see a lot of patients," states Lake Michigan
College Radiologic Technology program coordinator and instructor
Kerry Mohney. "You need to maintain the personal touch to
make sure that each patient feels important and cared for."
Other skills and knowledge you'll need to be successful include:
- critical thinking
- physical stamina to stand 4 to 6 hours a day and to lift up
to 50 lbs.
- strong verbal and written communication abilities
- team work
- multi-tasking abilities
- patience
- social perceptiveness
- a desire to help others
