Career
Opportunities and Work Life - Skilled Trades Technology
Throughout southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana, there are many
manufacturing employers that are looking for trained individuals
to fill high-skill, high-wage, high-demand positions. As a student
in the Skilled Trades Technology program, you can train for careers
in metalworking, drafting,
industrial maintenance, or electronics.
Work Environment
Various skilled trade technology jobs are found in manufacturing
environments that may require earplugs, work gloves and safety
gear. This industry is relying more and more on computers and
new technology. The increasing computerization of the manufacturing
industry is creating a demand for individuals with specialized
skills.
Typically skilled trades technology employees work a 40-hour
workweek, but heavy production periods or individual companies
may call for shift work or overtime.
Employment Outlook
The U.S. Department of Labor is expecting little growth in the
metalworking industry by 2012. Despite this, excellent employment
opportunities are available. As manufacturing industries invest
in new equipment, they rely on skilled tool and die, and metal
workers to make the equipment work properly.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the national need
for mechanical designers and drafters is increasing. Local demand
for skilled mechanical drafters and designers to fill these high-tech,
high-wage jobs is also increasing. Nationally, employment is predicted
to steadily increase through 2012. Michigan is predicted to increase
employment by four percent by 2012
Nationally, both electrical and electronic engineering technicians
are in huge demand, and the demand will only increase in the future
as advances in technology spread to more industries. So whether
you decide to make Berrien County your home, or travel to other
places, this degree gives you mobility and the demand to find
a good, steady job. Lake Michigan College will give you the basic
training to keep up with the changes in the electronics field
that will make you competitive for the job market.
Nationally, new job opportunities for industrial mechanics are
expected to grow by 16 percent by 2012. Within Michigan, jobs
are expected to remain relatively constant during the same time
period.
Career Advancement
Experience is irreplaceable in this field. Knowing the inner workings
of your company will give you an advantage when it comes to a
promotion for a higher-level position. Continuing your education
will also open up many career doors.
