Health Service programs available at Lake Michigan College

These are some of the fastest growing careers around and you
can be a part of them with training from Lake Michigan College.
Begin working within two years of high school graduation or
leave LMC with what you need to succeed at the four-year school
of your choice.
Health Service programs available at Lake Michigan College include:
Chiropractic (pre)
Chiropractors are members of the healthcare profession who treat
aliments without drugs or surgery. Most enter private practice
while others enter chiropractic education. Students can prepare
for a chiropractic career by completing a two-year program at
Lake Michigan College and transferring to a chiropractic school.
Through an agreement with Palmer College of Chiropractic, students
meeting specific requirements will receive preferred admission
status at that college.
Dental Assisting
The Dental Assisting program prepares students to write the
examination to become a Registered Dental Assistant. Registered
Dental Assistants assist in diagnostic, operative, surgical,
and preventative procedures. Dental assistants provide instrument
transfer during dental treatment, take x-rays, and prepare dental
materials, casts, and impression trays.
Dentistry (pre)
The minimum requirement for admission to dentistry school may
be completed at Lake Michigan College. Sixty semester hours
of the Pre-Dentistry program can be transferred to similar programs
at Michigan colleges and universities.
Early Childhood Education
The associate degree or certificate in Early Childhood prepares the sudent to work in child care settings such as Head Start and Day Care. It also qualifies graduates to open a day care center in their home. It does nto qualify graduates to teach in an elementary education setting.
Health
The courses offered in Health are for students interested in
personal and community health. Students have the opportunity
to become certified in life-saving techniques or first-aid procedures,
investigate various healthcare options, or evaluate their own
levels of healthful living and develop plans toward more health-filled
lifestyles.
Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine (pre)
Medical schools have increased their interest in students with
diverse academic training. In addition to expecting basic studies
in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, they want students
with interests and skills in humanities and social sciences.
By working with the Pre-medical advisor at Lake Michigan College,
students can develop an academic program designed to prepare
them for the medical school in which they are interested.
Nursing
The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program qualifies the graduate
to take the Michigan State Board Examination leading to state
licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). The RN is a primary care
provider to clients of all ages in a variety of healthcare settings
including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, offices, and home
healthcare settings.
The Practical Nursing (PN) program prepares graduates to take
the Michigan State Board Examination for practical nurse licensure.
Graduates can find employment working under the supervision
of an RN or doctor in extended care facilities, physician offices,
clinics, and some acute care facilities.
Optometry (pre)
Lake Michigan College offers most of the courses required for
admission to optometry school. The Pre-optometry advisor has
details about optometry schools.
Pharmacy (pre)
Students begin the Pre-pharmacy program at Lake Michigan College
by completing a two-year sequence of courses and transferring
to a four-year school.
Physical Education and Wellness
The Physical Education and Wellness program offers instruction,
physical education skills, programs, philosophy, and administration.
It is open to students planning to complete a major or minor
in physical education, recreation, or coaching for their bachelor's
degree program.
Physical Therapy (pre)
The course requirements for admission into a physical therapy
master's program may be completed at Lake Michigan College.
Since the minimum requirements vary among physical therapy schools,
students should become familiar with them for the physical therapy
school in which they are interested.
Psychology
Psychology is the study of human behavior, consciousness, and
experience. Students planning to major in Psychology at four-year
universities may complete the first two years of their program
at Lake Michigan College.
Radiologic
Technology
Radiographers (x-ray technicians) use radiation to produce images
of the human body. The responsibility of radiographer is to
produce radiographic film in work settings such as hospitals,
clinics, commercial x-ray laboratories, and physician offices.
Veterinary Medicine (pre)
Students may transfer to Michigan State University to complete
Pre-veterinary requirements after one or two years at Lake Michigan
College. The pattern is to complete the general education and
basic science requirements and to transfer at the junior level.
