Imagine doing something every day that makes life better for someone ... including you.

Human Service careers make a difference and give you opportunities.

These are some of the fastest growing careers around and you can be a part of them with training from Lake Michigan College. Begin working within two years of high school graduation or leave LMC with what you need to succeed at the four-year school of your choice.

Human Services programs available at Lake Michigan College include:

Chef Apprentice
The Chef Apprentice program provides students with a solid foundation in cooking skills, techniques, and knowledge. Through on-the-job training at local restaurants, clubs, hotels, as well as through classes at Lake Michigan College, students receive the first level of certification leading to certification as a Master Chef.

Corrections, Probation, & Parole
This program is for students with career goals in corrections, probation, parole, and related fields. The Academic Certificate is for those seeking entry-level employment in corrections. The Associate Degree program is a transfer program. Employment in Probation or Parole requires a bachelorŐs degree.

Education - Elementary
Elementary education is recommended for students who would like to teach in elementary schools as well as for those interested in becoming teacher aides. Elementary teachers create a learning environment and then evaluate the effectiveness of that learning. Education paraprofessionals work in schools and daycare centers as teacher assistants, school office assistants, and school library assistants.

Education - Secondary
Secondary teachers design courses of study, create learning experiences for students, and evaluate the effectiveness of learning programs. This area of study can lead to employment in secondary schools as well as community colleges.

Law (pre)
No particular undergraduate major is necessary to prepare for law school. Students should pursue a liberal arts program in which they are interested in order to attain maximum levels of achievement and success. They should focus on developing the high-level reasoning and writing skills needed to be successful in law school.

Law Enforcement
The Law Enforcement program is designed to give students a broad base of general education along with specific skills and knowledge in the filed of law enforcement. The program is designed to prepare students for a technical career upon graduation. With slight modifications, a transfer program can lead to a bachelorŐs degree at a four-year institution.

Mortuary Science (pre)
A two-year sequence of courses, which includes those that fulfill the requirement of the Associate in Science degree at Lake Michigan College, is designed for students who plan to transfer to Wayne State University and pursue the Pre-Mortuary curriculum.

Political Science
Political Science is the study of local, state, national, and international governments and their impact on society. Students pursing a bachelorŐs degree in Political Science may complete their first two years of coursework at Lake Michigan College. Political Science courses are transferable to other institutions in Michigan and elsewhere. Political Science is recommended for students interested in government service, elective politics, or a law degree.

Sociology/Social Work (pre)
Sociology is the study of the social and cultural life of humans. Occupations in sociology/social work usually require a bachelor's or master's degree. The Sociology discipline at Lake Michigan College provides students with the first two years of a bachelor's program.
