Inside
PowerPoint is a monthly newsletter filled with useful
tips for users. Among the articles in this month's issue:
"Sync up your Presentation with the Rehearse Timings Feature"
by Michelle Rogers
For many of us, the only thing worse than speaking in front of
people is rehearsing what to say beforehand. After all, you've
spent a great deal of time creating a stunning presentation, so
you surely don't want to run too long or too short during the
delivery. Fortunately, PowerPoint's Rehearse Timings feature can
help you adjust the flow of your presentation.
Inside
Photoshop is a monthly publication for Photoshop users. In
this issue:
"A Majestic Approach to Photo Manipulation"
by Amy Courtright
We've all heard the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
Well, what if we could see what other people see? If that were
the case, the world may be a better place. With that said, one
of the wonders of Photoshop is that we can show people exactly
what we've seen. No, not the original photograph, but a personal
interpretation of our own experience, both visually and emotionally.
Rather than just relying on the camera to capture a moment, we'll
show you how to use Photoshop to add a touch of magic and mystery
to your images.
New Books in the Teaching & Learning Center:
PDF
with Acrobat 5: Visual QuickStart Guide We've all been there.
You receive a document in email that won't print correctly because
it was created with fonts not installed on your system, or the
file is a QuarkXPress document and you use PageMaker. Adobe's
Portable Document Format (PDF) was designed to alleviate that
frustration, and it's quickly become the cross-platform standard.
If you need to send, annotate, and receive documents that retain
fidelity to their formatting, you need PDF with Acrobat 5: Visual
QuickStart Guide. Author Jen Alspach takes a task-based, visual
approach to teaching Acrobat, using pictures to guide readers
through the basics of creating PDF files with Acrobat 5, adding
annotations, creating forms, viewing PDFs online, and using Acrobat
with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Acrobat 5.0's new features,
including digital signatures, batch processing, customizable toolbars,
and increased security options are also explained throughout this
book.
Ted
Padova's Adobe Acrobat 5 PDF Bible meets the needs of users
at all levels. It has an indepth section covering the use of Adobe
Acrobat Reader (for the majority of people in the world) as well
detailed sections covering all the major components of the full
version - Distiller, Acrobat (and its multitude of plugins), and
Catalog. The book is well-organized and has many great workflow
ideas as well as tips and techniques to give even the most savvy
user new ideas.
This
update to Lynda Weinman's highly successful Designing Web Graphics
series addresses the new technologies related to Web site design,
such as dynamic HTML (DHTML), the Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
format, and standardized red-green-blue (sRGB). It also discusses
the new software programs that help you create and optimize Web
graphics, such as Adobe ImageReady and Macromedia Fireworks. Weinman
also deals with the old favorites, such as Photoshop and Paintshop
Pro, and continues to focus on creating good-looking, compact
graphics, as opposed to writing HTML, say, or setting up a server.
Over
1,100 pages in length, Dreamweaver 4 Bible comes with a
trial version of Dreamweaver 4, making it a one-purchase training
resource for anyone looking to learn and master the product. A
good chunk of the first portion of the book is devoted to providing
the lay of Dreamweaver land and examining the development interface,
configuration options, and effective use of the help system. Although
one of Dreamweaver's strongest claims to fame is its ability to
create fully functional Web sites with little or no HTML coding,
the book wisely educates you on HTML basics nonetheless. As your
knowledge of Dreamweaver grows, the book's presentation style
evolves. Early on, material is presented via discrete tasks, such
as adding a navigation bar, adjusting font size, and adding an
e-mail link. Later on, general techniques are discussed, such
as using rollovers and exploiting cascading style sheets. All
of the examples are accompanied by excellent narration, tips,
notes, and pointers to examples on the CD-ROM. If you're diving
into Dreamweaver, take the plunge using this fine resource.
Dreamweaver
4 Magic: Many designers have "pop-up menu" envy
over all the sleek variations that can be found on the Web. Al
Sparber and the crew at Projectseven.com are well known for their
tutorials and Dreamweaver extensions that help designers create
state-of-the-art effects. This book shares some of their work,
particularly the latest in cool menu designs. Although readers
should have experience with Dreamweaver, the book is written in
a clear manner that outlines carefully what will be accomplished
at each stage and why you might want to carry out any given task
in a certain way. Since the tutorials all rely on the custom extensions,
readers do have to follow along faithfully. In essence, this is
a cookbook-style manual, using some prepackaged ingredients, and
with each recipe producing the desired meal. Each chapter ends
by explaining how readers can modify the results with their own
design flavorings.
Dreamweaver
4 Hands-On Training is the latest, updated version of the
highly acclaimed tutorial from leading Web-design trainers Garo
Green and Lynda Weinman. Thousands of Dreamweaver users have learned
how to use the program by simply doing the step-by-step exercises
in this foolproof book. The exercises use a real-life Web site
to demonstrate how to create everything from rollover effects--using
automated JavaScript behaviors, to page layouts--using one of
Dreamweaver 4's latest features, Layout Tables. Advanced sections
of the book show how to create interactive, moving elements in
your Web site, and how to download and use the hundreds of free
extensions available online to Macromedia Dreamweaver users. And
throughout the book, readers learn useful bits of information
about HTML, online type, Web color, and more.
Dreamweaver
4: Visual Quickstart A tutorial for those who have used some
type of page creation tool before. Introduces basics, then provides
in-depth coverage of features of the latest version of the software.
There is also material on workflow and collaboration issues, discussing
improved design notes and content management integration. All
chapters feature many screenshots, sidebars, and practical tips
to guide readers through every task.
