1. Make sure you answer the question.
2. Revise. Editing takes time. Spell check doesn't always help.
3. Be yourself and be original.
4. Don't "thesaurize" your composition. Big words don't necessarily mean big scholarships.
5. Spend most time on the introduction and make body paragraphs relate to it.
6. Use transition.
7. A good ending is important.
8. Leave it alone for a while. Then go back and take another look.
