Connecting Students and the Community
Imagine being on the Lake Michigan College campus and wherever
you walk there are students making music. A student playing
the guitar in the corridor on outside on a warm spring day.
The sound of a piano wafting through the halls. A quarter of
students practicing songs for their upcoming recital. Even the
rhythmic beat of drums that cause us to irresistibly "tap
our toes".
All these things help bring a campus alive and
bring people and communities together.
That is the Lake Michigan College Music Program
vision - to connect students and communities with outstanding
musical opportunities.
A Bold New Future
The College Music Program is taking bold steps to move to new
heights of education and performance excellence. For our students,
our College, and our community, the Music Program is embarking
on an effort to become one of only 20 accredited programs among
the nation's community colleges.
High aspirations, indeed! While much has been
accomplished by the LMC Music Department over the years, much
remains to be done.
The Value of Accreditation
With accreditation the College's Music Program has a stamp of
approval, verifying academic strength and operational integrity.
Accreditation will distinguish Lake Michigan College among
competing community college programs and increase our ability
to recruit students, particularly those who plan a music career.
Transfer of Lake Michigan College graduates to four-year institutions
will also be enhanced, giving the region's high school students
yet another reason to choose Lake Michigan College for their
first two years of college.
Music Matters to All of Us
To accomplish its objective of national accreditation, the
College's Music Department, in partnership with the Lake Michigan
College Foundation Fulfill the Dream program, has undertaken
a $525,000 fund-raising campaign that will provide the needed
facilities improvements and additions to equipment. It also
has set an ambitious goal of increasing the number of scholarships
available to area students.
In the coming months members of the Lake Michigan
College Music Education Advisory Board will be contacting friends
of the College's music program to seek their support. When you
are called we hope you will join us in this important effort.
"I would encourage anyone to start their
musical education at LMC where the faculty cares about you,
your progress, and your success. They are more than willing
to help wherever necessary...to help a student succeed."
