What Not to Bring

  • Too many clothes – If you haven’t worn it in the past year, you probably won’t wear it here!
  • Too many knick knacks – If your Magic 8 ball, slinky, and Legos are taking up half your desk, you’ll have a hard time using it to study.
  • Velcro, double-sided tape, hooks with double-sided taped, etc. – They will damage the walls when removed and may result in charges to fix the damage.

Living Room

  • Entire collection of books and movies – Pick a few favorites, and leave the rest.
  • Furniture – You do not have as much room in your apartment as you may think.
  • Candles, Oil Lamps, and Incense – They may smell good but they’re fire hazards. Consider wickless candles or plug-ins as an alternative to keep your room smelling fresh.
  • Amplified instruments or drum sets – Be courteous to your neighbors and they’ll reciprocate.

Kitchen

  • Alcohol – It’s against the rules and regulations to have alcohol at Beckwith Hall regardless of age.
  • Appliances with exposed heating coils or wires – This includes space heaters, electric skillets, and toasters. Halogen lamps are prohibited.
  • BBQ grills, charcoal, lighter fluid, propane – There will not be anywhere for you to use these items in or around the building.

Miscellaneous

  • Drugs and drug paraphernalia (i.e. pipes, bongs, hookahs, etc.) – This should go without saying, but moving into your residence hall suite with drugs is a pretty rough way to start out the year. You’ll be setting yourself up to focus on things other than academics. Don’t sabotage all the work you did to get to college by making a mistake when you first arrive.
  • Firearms or weapons of any kind – This includes air rifles, paintball guns, knives (over 3 inches in length), swords, BB guns, sling shots, etc.
  • Pets (i.e. cats, dogs, ferrets, snakes, etc.) – Due to health and safety hazards and sanitation problems, pets are not allowed in the residence halls. Only fish are allowed in your individual bedroom (but not in the apartment’s common areas). Your fish must be kept in an aquarium (less than 10 gallons) and be well cared for.
  • Hard-to-replace paperwork – While you might need things like your birth certificate and your social security card once or twice during your time in school, it’s better to bring it to campus, show it to whoever needs to see it and then send or bring it back home.
