March 3, 2009 Ambulance Adds BENTON TOWNSHIPThe paramedic training program was made possible through a capacity building grant from Michigan Works! to develop new teaching techniques, purchase equipment and provide professional development to healthcare workers. “There is an increased demand for paramedics and this collaboration is addressing that need for our communities,” explained LMC Interim President Dr. Robert Harrison. “In just one year, this program can impact not only the careers of EMTs but will also help to strengthen the local health care system with more highly-trained professionals.” To enroll in the paramedic training class, students must have their basic EMT license. The program meets three days a week and includes classroom and skills laboratory work. Instruction for the class is provided by a Medic 1 Ambulance certified and trained paramedic instructor. The College recently acquired an ambulance to utilize as a mobile learning lab for paramedic and EMT classes. The fully-equipped ambulance mimics a real-life environment for the students. According to Harrison, a simulation mannequin will also be added to the ambulance for enhanced training. “Health care is one of the tri-county’s fastest growing industry sectors,” said Todd Gustafson, executive director of Michigan Works!, who explained that the organization’s 10-year labor market projections predict a need for more than 3,000 new and replacement health care workers in the tri-county area. “Our strong partnerships with local educators like Medic 1 Ambulance Executive Director Jack Fisher said, “This collaboration between Medic 1 Ambulance and LMC is a great opportunity for someone to receive the necessary training as a paramedic and have the opportunity to start a new, fast-paced career in emergency medical services working at such places like Medic 1 Ambulance, which is the largest ambulance service provider in Berrien County with great benefits and opportunities.” The next paramedic training program class begins in August and the deadline to apply for admission is May 31. Applications for the program are available at Medic 1 Ambulance in Benton Harbor.
