Comparing Search Techniques Between a Database (Academic Search Elite-EBSCOhost) and Google (Search Engine)

One does not always search online resources (e.g., databases and search engines) the same way. The table below reflects the similarities and differences:

Search Techniques

Full-text magazine database

(locates magazine articles from over 2000 magazines)

NOTE: This is a subscription database subscribed by the Hessel Library.

(locates web sites on the World Wide Web)

Finds documents with both words. Include "and" in your search.

Finds pages with both words.

NOT

Finds documents with the word, "recipes" but not "chocolate." Include "not" in your search.

recipes -chocolate

Finds pages with the word, "recipes" but not "chocolate."

OR

pies or cakes

Finds documents with either the word, "pies" or "cakes."

Include "or" in your search.

pies OR cakes

Capitalize OR and it will find documents with either word.

AND/OR with ()

rain forest and (medicine or drugs)

Finds documents with "rain forest and medicine" as well as documents with "rain forest and drugs."

 
Phrase searching

line item veto

Finds documents with "line item veto" in the same sequence as keyed in. Usually not necessary in EBSCOhost to use quotatons marks around the phrase. Other databases may work best with quotes around the phrase.

"line item veto"

Finds pages with "line item veto" in the same sequence as keyed in. Quotations ARE NEEDED around the phrase.

Proximity [n]

farming n5 organic

Finds documents containing "farming" and "organic" which occur within five or fewer words of each other in either direction. One can use numbers from 1-10.

 
Wildcard

working wom?n

Finds documents with the words, "working woman" or "working women."

Google does not support wildcard searches.

 

Truncation or stemming

stocks and invest*

Finds documents with the word "stocks" along with variations of the word "invest," e.g., investing, investment, investments, and investors.

 

Google does not provide any form of truncation or stemming.

Capitalization
The search is not affected either way by capitals or lower case letters. The search is not affected either way by capitals or lower case letters.
