Introduction

Welcome to the Library Research Tutorial. The purpose of this tutorial is to learn the operations of the library's electronic resources, to develop library research skills, and use critical thinking skills searching the library's electronic resources or electronic library. The online catalog and the electronic resources (databases) discussed are specific to the William Hessel Library. These are NOT resources that you access from a search engine.

Boolean Searching

  • Learn what Boolean searching is and the operators used. Remember, most databases allow for Boolean searching. And you will see Boolean mentioned in the different database tutorials - proof that it is an important search strategy!

Subject Headings

  • Why are using subject headings a good way to search? This tutorial will explain.

Online Catalog

  • This is the Hessel Library's online catalog. One can search the in-house holdings (books and audio-visuals) as well as eBooks. Learn how to check your account, renew materials online, and the Reserve a Title feature available for students at the non-Napier campuses.

netLibrary

  • This tutorial will introduce you to eBooks. These are published, copyrighted books, available to read in electronic format. Over 24,000!

CQ Researcher

  • This database only includes one title - CQ Researcher - published in print and online 44 tmes a year. According to the publisher, the single-themed CQ Researcher report offers "in-depth, non-biased coverage of political and social issues, with regular reports on topics in health, international affairs, education, the environment, technology and the U.S. economy
    on current topics."

EBSCOhost Research Databases

  • Several databases are available through EBSCOhost, including a health related database and a business database. One of the tutorials will focus on Academic Search Elite, a multi-disciplinary database (covers all subject areas) that offers full text for more than 2,000 serials, including more than 1,500 peer-reviewed titles. There is also an Image Library available - a great place to look for pictures.

Lexis-Nexis

  • One of the several categories to search in Lexis-Nexis is the NEWS category. One can search the full-text of current and back issues of major newspapers - some going as far back as 20 years.

WilsonSelectPlus on FirstSearch

  • FirstSearch has 30 databases that you can search. For this tutorial take a look at WilsonSelectPlus, an online database to full-text articles with 1600 magazines.
