Guide to Library Services for All Campuses

Purpose for this guide

This library guide has been created to assist the Lake Michigan College community in locating library resources whether one is visiting the William Hessel Library located on the Napier campus or accessing the library electronically via the library's Web site.

Comments about the electronic library - subscription databases

By accessing the Hessel Library home page at: http://www.lakemichigancollege.edu/lib/ students and staff at the campuses at Bertrand Crossing, South Haven, Napier and M-TECsm can search the library's:

  • Online Catalog (holdings of books and audio visuals materials)
  • 60+ databases, with over 30 of the databases providing full-text information from magazines, newspapers, and books (sources such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographies, and eBooks, which are published copyrighted titles)

Use the bulleted descriptive links on the left hand side of the library's Web pages to locate library catalogs and databases. Internet computers are available on all campuses. Or, search from home on your Internet computer using passwords or logging into the Research Portal via the Online Catalog.

NOTE: The subscription databases are NOT searchable or found via search engines (the public Web). These databases are specific to the LMC community and contain in many instances, full-text information from traditional print (published) sources such as books, magazines, newspapers, reference books, etc. It is recommended to begin searching for information using the library's subscription databases before obtaining information from Web sites via search engines.

Off campus access to the subscription databases

  • Use the new Research Portal to access and search simultaneously or selectively the Online Catalog and any listed databases in the portal on and off campus. Go to the Online Catalog and log in to access this feature. NOTE: The log in screen will ask for your 8 digit ID and your 6 digit birthdate. You can then search selected databases without the need for each database's password.

  • A printed listing of all databases, with descriptive information and passwords is available for staff and students at the Circulation Desk.

Siena Heights students should contact the Hessel Library's Circulation Desk at 269-927-8605 for information about accessing the databases from off campus.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan is a method of sharing resources (borrowing or lending of materials or requesting photocopied magazine articles) among libraries.

Interlibrary loan service is available to all faculty, staff, and students. (Siena Heights students are eligible.) Individuals who are not LMC employees or students should request interlibrary loans through their public library.

Materials that can be obtained include: books; photocopies of journal/magazine articles; and dissertations and theses. Items usually not available to borrow include: entire print issues of journals/magazines; reference and genealogical materials; and sometimes media (e.g., videos, records); and recent releases or items older than 100 years.

To search for books and articles online, select the Interlibrary Loans link (http://www.lakemichigancollege.edu/lib/interloan.html).

To locate books, search the FirstSearch database, WorldCat, the union catalog or database that contains the holdings to over 47,000 libraries or over one billion holdings. If you locate a book you desire, click on the ILL icon on the screen, fill in the appropriate information and submit your request. For magazine articles, search and request from the ArticleFirst database on FirstSearch.

Most interlibrary loan requests are filled at no cost. Occasionally there will be a fee if the item is only available at institutions that charge fees. When you complete your interlibrary loan request, indicate the amount, if any, you are willing to pay. This will help us complete your request faster if there will be a charge. Allow 7 to 10 days for receipt of item(s).Return to top
