Self Instructional Language Program
GOETHE ON LANGUAGE: "HE WHO KNOWS ONE, KNOWS NONE."
Lake Michigan College offers courses in French, Italian, Japanese,
Polish, and Russian in accordance with an instructional format
developed by the National Association of Self Instructional Language
Programs (NASILP), a 150-member organization of colleges and universities
engaged in self-directed foreign language study.
These courses are taught in learner-cerntered format incorporating
weekly 2-hour drill sessions conducted by native speakers. Students
work with textual materials which incorporate audio and or audiovisual
components. The drill instructor ensures control of spoken language
at normal conversational pace with correct pronunciation. Those
taking the course for credit will be examined at the end of the
semester by a NASILP certified language instructor.
LMC also offers French, German, and Spanish taught in the traditional
classroom format. Spanish is also offered as a Telecourse.
Self-instructional audio programs in Afrikaans, Hebrew, Hungarian,
and Swahili can be checked out from the LMC
Library.
