Partnership: The Key to Success
Roundtable Discussions
Dance/Drama Room
Developing Our New Science and Technology Intellectual Capital
1. Your group has a new science and technology issue to address.
Please spend time defining the issue by identifying elements that
help understand it. (10 min)
Change in population and how they learn. What is not being done
and what needs to change to encourage an environment of learning.
Students come in without the basic skills needed to succeed.
What does it mean to be an adult learner? Both faculty and students
need to understand this.
Alternative modalities of delivery and using technology. Also,
what is being delivered?
Design of curriculum needs to be addressed with all the changes
coming down the line. "Lego" concept of curriculum development.
In the Biotech movement, liberal arts faculty are trying to develop
courses that have been typically handled by "occupational"
faculty. There has been a merging of college divisions. "Degree"
vs. "skills set."
Issues of "degree" or more customized; transferable,
flexible designs.
Community colleges should prepare students not only for transferability,
but also for a career. It's the student's choice, not the schools.
Do hiring practices match what they say they want?
Risk for faculty in not being able to develop professionally
and to avoid becoming obsolete.
Better advising.
Meaningful skills sets should receive certificates. Then those
related meaningful skill sets could be combined towards a degree.
Another challenge comes from the faculty and administrative perspective.
Where do the community colleges go for the intellectual capital?
It may not be internal any longer. This will completely change.
Is it about student learning or about "us?"
We need to identify each student's goals when they come to a
community college. In addition, the student should be assured
receipt of their core competencies. College needs to be accountable
for the competencies with which the student leaves the school.
There needs to be a balance between what the student is looking
for and what the employer wants.
Is Singapore math more effective or because it's Singapore?
2. What information/research related to this new science and
technology issue will be helpful and where might this be found?
(8 min)
| Information |
|
Source |
-
Demographics - Companies; age of students;
age of workforce
-
Keep on top of trends in the job market
-
What is the emerging technology?
-
Information about what employers really want
|
|
- Best practices
- Competitive analysis
- Across college-level input
- Faculty who not only teach, but also do external scanning
for the consortium
- Surveys to surrounding companies and businesses you
want to reach
- Advisory boards
|
3. Identify challenges & opportunities related to this
new science and technology issue. (10 min)
| Challenges |
|
Opportunities |
- Involve diverse populations
- Short product life cycle & dollar values
- Curriculum approval
- Who do we tap to be ahead?
- Teach students how to learn
- Blurred use of training vs. education; not producing
critical thinkers
- Recognize the combination of liberal arts and occupational
studies
- Community in general doesn't truly understand the definition
of a "technician." Jobs require much more technology
than most people realize.
- Educators need to understand their roles and recognize
all the stakeholders and meet their needs.
- Early introduction to K-12 of emerging technology
- Are faculty prepared to deal with students at varying
levels of knowledge regarding technology?
- Class size (minimums)
- "We have met the enemy, and it is us."
- We tend not to be student-focused, focused on the needs
of our community and business.
- Entrenched in educational personnel and processes.
- "Soft skills" are not taught (e.g., arrive
on time, be courteous, communicate well)
|
|
- Pre-testing
- Transitional courses
- Raise the bar. What are basic skill levels for employment?
- Look for a new business model.

4. Based upon what you know, brainstorm strategies to address
the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities related
to this new science and technology issue. (15 min)
Primary Strategy: Work collaboratively to collect data
on new sciences and technology - pool our resources to determine
what we need. Have an advisory board composed of faculty, community,
business, and politicians.
Second Strategy: Example of outcome measurement change:
Move out of current mode of graduation requirements and determine
student skills.
Third Strategy: Strategic deployment; intellectual capital
Inter-college recognition of need for change.
Need to address public policy issues and improve current indicators
of student success. Better defined outcomes.
Utilize MODAC group
Administrative structure change, so both deans (Arts & Sciences
and Occupational Studies) oversee both divisions.
Be more strategic about intellectual capital and how it is built.
Faculty should be responsible for their own employability.
5. Select the 3 more important strategies. (5 min)

7. It is the year 2010. Each participant in your group receives
a "hot-off-the-press" edition of World Today. The headline
is a success story related to the new science and technology issue.
Write the headline below. (2 min)
Michigan: "The Cool State" - Lowest Unemployment Rate
in Nation
8. Identify ways that this new science and technology issue
discussion and recommended strategies can be pursued, continued
and the volunteers who are willing to assist. (5min)
