LMC to Host Lecture at South Haven Campus
BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI - Lake Michigan College's
Institute for Diversity and Leadership will host a lecture at
the South Haven campus titled "Arab-Americans as You Never
Knew Them: From Invisibility to Profiling." The session,
which is free and open to the public, will be held on Friday,
December 5, at noon at the South Haven campus in room 141.
Presenter Rosina Hassoun, Ph. D. will give an introduction to
the Arab world, the Middle East, Islam, and Eastern Christianity.
She will also discuss settlement patterns and immigration history
as well as the history of civil rights issues and activism related
to Arab-Americans.
"This is a timely topic that impacts all of us," states
Lee Gill, dean of LMC's Institute for Diversity and Leadership.
"The information Dr. Hassoun will provide in this one-hour
discussion will give participants a better understanding of
the emerging global and national challenges facing our country."
Dr. Hassoun is an anthropologist with a special focus on immigrants
and ethnicity in the United States, especially as it related
to Arab-Americans. She is an adjunct professor at Michigan State
University where she is credited with creating one of the first
college courses on Arab-Americans taught in the United States.
As a principle investigator, Hassoun has received grants from
the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Cleveland
