Lake Michigan College Athletes Move On to 4-Year
Intercollegiate Play
BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI - Five Lake Michigan College
athletes will take their athletic talent to a higher level beginning
this year as they move on to play intercollegiate athletics
at four-year universities.
"We are extremely proud of these student-athletes who will
be representing Lake Michigan College at the next level,"
states Doug Schaffer, LMC athletic director. "Each is a
person of strong character who took full advantage of the opportunity
community college athletics provides."
Two of these outstanding athletes played on LMC's 2005 regional
championship men's basketball team that placed seventh in the
nation at the national championship. Anton Duncan of Benton
Harbor will play basketball at West Virginia State University
(NCAA Division II) on a full scholarship. While at LMC, Duncan
was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association
Western Conference Player of the Year, and was named to the
First Team All-State and All-Region teams and to the 2005 NJCCA
National All-Tournament Team.
Desmond Favors of Niles has accepted a full scholarship
to play basketball at Northwood University (NCAA Division II)
in Midland, Michigan. Athletic honors that Favors received while
at LMC included being named to the First Team All-Conference,
All-State, and All-Region teams.
LMC softball player Albani Sheperd of Dayton, Ohio, will
play softball on full scholarship for the Western Michigan University
Broncos (NCAA Division I) under head coach Kathy Lietke, a former
LMC athlete, softball coach and athletic director, and member
of the LMC Athletic Hall of Fame. While at LMC, Shepherd was
named to the first team All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State
softball teams.
Sara Layher of Buchanan will take her volleyball talent
to Saginaw Valley State University (NCAA Division II) on a full
scholarship. Honors Layher earned while at LMC include being
a two-time honorable mention member of the All-Conference volleyball
team.
LMC baseball player Dane Nelson of St. Joseph has been
invited to walk on to the Western Michigan University (NCAA
Division I) baseball team. While at LMC, he was named to the
Honorable Mention All-State baseball team.
Lake Michigan College is a member of the National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA),Region XII and the Michigan Community
College Athletic Association (MCCAA). The College's intercollegiate
athletic program includes women's volleyball, men's and women's
