The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to
establish procedures by which students may inspect and review
their records, and to provide for the correction of inaccurte
information. Request for the review of records are to be made
at the Records & Registration Office.
Confidential student information shall only be released under
the following circumstances :
- Written authorization by the student, and/or
- Pursuant to a court order (the college shall make a reasonable
effort to notify the student prior to compliance)
Release of public, or 'Directory' information shall not be restricted
by the above conditions.
Lake Michigan College has designated certain student information
as public or 'Directory' information. Directory information shall
include a student's name, telephone number, major field of study,
participation in officially recognized activities and sports (including
height and weight of athletic team members), dates of attendance,
degrees earned and academic awards received, and the most previous
educational institution attended by the student.
If a student wishes that the college not release any or all of
the above information, he or she must inform the College Registrar
in writing. Such records will remain restricted until released
by the student or after one year of non-attendance at LMC.
Forms to request the withholding of 'Directory' information are
available at the Records & Registration Office. In order to
ensure the proper withholding of information, written notification
should be received by the end of the Add/Drop period for the semester/session
when the withholding should begin. Questions regarding the Family
Educational Rights & Privacy Act should be directed to the
College Registrar.
