What is the difference between a counselor and an advisor?
Counselors are required to be licensed by the State of Michigan
to provide services including test interpretations, personal and
career counseling. They work within offices to ensure confidentiality,
and contact is generally on an appointment basis. Advisors provide
assistance with class selection, scheduling and advising of courses
to meet requirements of your chosen program.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my counseling
appointment?
The most productive meeting will occur if you have applied for
admission and completed the assessment. Transcripts that reflect
course work completed at other colleges/universities will also
be helpful.

and determine what you have already completed.

I haven't gone to college before. I don't understand the "whole
college thing". Do classes work like in high school?
Completing college-level classes is not the same as completing
high school classes. Your level of responsibility is much greater.
You probably will be in a classroom not much different than in
high school and most likely you will have an instructor addressing
the class. You will find that the lecture portion of the class
is but one component. You will supplement the lecture with your
own reading, research and thinking. A general rule for college
work is that for every hour you spend in class, you will need
to spend an additional two hours studying outside of class.

I don't know what I am going to major in or if I am going to
transfer. How do I know what courses to take?
During your meeting with the counselor you will discover a number
of courses that are common to many programs
of study. You can begin with these kinds of courses. You might
elect to explore other areas of interest by enrolling in a specific
course or two. Depending on your scores
you might begin by sharpening your basic skills.

What is MACRAO?
Many students come to Lake Michigan College to earn the first
two years of their bachelor's degree with plans to transfer to
a four-year college or university. The MACRAO Transfer Agreement
was created to simplify your transfer from one institution to
another. The agreement stipulates that 30 semester credit hours
of 100 level or above, compatible, general course work will be
granted smooth transferability to participating universities.
The MACRAO agreement only addresses general studies requirements.
Any major and minor requirements and proficiencies required of
you are determined by each individual four-year school. Additional
details are available in the Lake
Michigan College Catalog.

I have been told I need to be a full-time student taking at
least 12 credits. Is this true?
Full-time status is defined as being enrolled for a total of at
least 12 credit hours during the fall
and winter semesters. There is no full-time enrollment status
the Spring/Summer sessions. LMC does not require that a student
be full-time. Many students enroll in just one class each semester.
A class may be as little as one credit or as many as 8 credits
during a semester. The credit hours assigned to a specific course
are listed in the College catalog
and in the semester schedules.
(Sometimes your insurance carrier has college enrollment requirements)

I want to get done fast. Isn't it a good idea to take as many
courses as possible a semester?
NO!! If you rush to get done and have to drop classes on the way
or get poor grades, it will take as long to get done as if you
took your time and did well without having to repeat courses.
Repeating classes is expensive in both time and money. If you
are planning to transfer, keep in mind that admission may be competitive.
You need to get good grades.

I am an international student. Are there additional admission
requirements?
There are a number of special requirements for international students.
Read this important information.

What do I do if I want to drop a class? Can I just stop attending
the class?
Please review the Lake Michigan
College policy.

I took classes at LMC 20 years ago. Are my credits still good?
Earned college credit does not have a life. Your English 101 class
that you complete in 1985 still counts and would be used in meeting
graduation requirements. There are certain specific courses that
are only applicable for ten years (such as Human Anatomy and Principles
of Human Physiology). These courses are tied to limited enrollment
programs of study.

What do I have to do to change my curriculum code (major)?
Each time that you complete the registration process, you have
the opportunity to modify your selected curriculum code. With
each change, the new code replaces the previous code and is printed
on your official transcript. It is no longer necessary to complete
a Change of Major Form in between registration activities.
When do I receive my grades?
Grades are no longer mailed to individual students. Students may
access their grades by going on-line one week after the semester/session
ends. You can access your grades through WaveLink
using your student ID and password. Requests for printed grades
will be accepted in person, with picture ID, or in writing.
What are the advantages of early registration?
The advantages for completing early registration include securing
your seat in a specific class while there is a seat to secure.
If you register early, then you don't have to be concerned about
the next semester until it begins. The earlier that you register
for the up-coming semesters, the more (and smaller) payments you
can enjoy via the FACTS plan.

I'm not sure that I've taken all the classes that I need to
take to get my degree. How can I find out?
You can complete a Pre-Grad
Audit Request Form. This request will result in a printed
list of required courses for a specific degree and include the
courses that you have completed, the courses that you are currently
enrolled in and indicate what courses you still need to complete.
You are limited to only two audits per semester. You must have
completed a minimum of 30 semester hours toward a degree or 15
semester hours toward a certificate. There is no fee for this
service.
