Transferring to a Four Year Institution

Many students attend Lake Michigan College with the intent of transferring to a four-year institution. If this is your plan, you will want to consider the following:

Transfer Plan
in a Nutshell

  • Find a four year institution to which you wish to transfer by visiting their website, the Michigan College Mall website, and attending our Transfer Day & Nights in October
  • Visit the transfer college of your choice and meet with the academic advisor for the program you want to pursue. Plan with them which classes to take at Lake Michigan College
  • Apply to your transfer college
  • Have Lake Michigan College send a copy of your transcript to your transfer college

1.) RESEARCH - It is important not to wait until enrolling for your last class at Lake Michigan College before researching other colleges. You should begin to consider where you want to transfer and the Lake Michigan College courses you will need for your transfer program. Always check with a college counselor/advisor to make sure your selected classes will transfer to the four year institution.

2.) WEBSITE - Visit the Michigan College Mall for assistance in choosing your transfer institution. This website offers guidelines as to how various institutions within Michigan transfer each other's classes. It also provides admission applications and homepage links to Michigan colleges.

3.) VISIT - Once you have selected your transfer institution, a campus visit is a must. Be sure to call ahead and arrange for a tour. You'll also want to set up an appointment to meet with the academic advisor of the program in which you are interested.

4.) TRANSFER DAY - If you are having difficulty selecting a transfer institution, LMC hosts a Transfer Day and Night every October where representatives from over 50 colleges and universities are available to meet with you and provide you with brochures and pamphlets of their college and available programs.

5.) APPLY - Approximately one year before you want to transfer, you will need to apply for admission to the transfer school of your choice. Again, you can obtain many Michigan college admission applications at the Michigan College Mall or stop by our Richard J. Pappas Student Services Center at the Napier campus.

6.) TRANSCRIPT - During the beginning of your final semester of coursework at Lake Michigan College, request that a current transcript be sent upon graduation to the transfer institution of your choice. You can do this by printing the Transcript Request Form, filling it out and mailing or faxing it to Lake Michigan College with your payment. Once you have received word from your transfer institution concerning the classes for which you have been given credit, meet with the academic advisor at your transfer institution to begin planning your coursework.

By following these steps, you should have a smooth transition from Lake Michigan College to any other institution and eliminate the chances of taking classes that won't apply towards a four-year degree.
