Upward Bound
Disciplinary Policy

In order to provide uniformity in the administering of disciplinary action, the following action will be taken for infractions of the General Rules and Regulations cited in the Upward Bound Parent-Scholar Contract and Student Handbook.

1. Scholar will meet with the Upward Bound Director, Pre-College Coordinator/Advisor, or Academic Programs Coordinator regarding the infraction and will be issued a verbal warning. A written report of the infraction and action will be mailed to the parent/guardian and will be included in the scholar’s file.

2. A second violation of the infraction will result in placing the scholar on probation, following a second meeting with the scholar regarding the infraction. A letter will be mailed to the scholar. A copy of the letter will also be mailed to the parent/guardian and placed in the scholar’s file.

3. A third infraction will result in a meeting with the scholar, parent, Director, and another staff member if applicable. A third infraction will/may result in termination from the Program. Except for the following infractions, which will result in immediate termination, no scholar will be terminated without a meeting with the scholar and parent/guardian.

a. No scholar shall possess or use any drug, except medicine prescribed by a physician, cleared with the Director, and recorded in the scholar’s file. No scholar or Upward Bound Staff will dispense over-the-counter drugs, including aspirin, Tylenol, etc. Any scholar judged to be under the influence of unauthorized drugs will be immediately dismissed from the Program.

b. No scholar shall possess or consume any form of tobacco or alcohol. Any scholar judged to be under the influence of alcohol will be immediately dismissed from the Program.

c. Borrowing without explicit permission of the property owner, or theft of private or public property, will result in immediate dismissal from the Program.

d. Possession or use of a dangerous weapon will result in immediate dismissal from the Program.

e. Harassment or any other behavior deemed by the Staff to be inappropriate (fighting, cursing, gambling, giving someone the middle finger, physical or verbal abuse, etc.) will be grounds for dismissal from the Program.
