Upward Bound
General Policy

Scholars, you are expected to behave as young adults at all times. You will be learning on a college campus with people from different backgrounds, yet a similar objective - education. We must respect the rights of others, just as we are expecting them to respect ours. Our actions (making noise, teasing, playing around, etc.) should not go beyond reason at any time.

The following rules have been established to help you have a safe and successful Upward Bound experience.

Respect: Respect other scholars, staff, and yourself. Respect others whom you may encounter. Through both your works and your actions, always treat others with dignity and respect.

Courtesy: “Please” and “thank you” are very powerful words. A smile is the universal sign of friendship. Being courteous to others will create a pleasant and sociable atmosphere.

Language: Profanity will not be tolerated. Do not swear or use degrading language.

Dress/Attire: Upward Bound scholars should dress appropriately at all times. You are representing the Program and, more importantly, presenting yourself to others. Baggy pants and shorts are not permissable. Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than 2” above the kneecap and must come below your fingertips.

Medication: Staff members will not dispense aspirin or medication to any scholar. Inform Program staff about any prescription or over-the-counter medication you are taking. Medicine prescribed by a doctor must be shown to Program staff and recorded in the scholar’s file. Each scholar must have a handwritten note from a parent/guardian for any medications to be approved for used during Program activities or events.

At all times, the following rules will be enforced:

• No scholar shall possess or use any drug, except medicine prescribed by a physician, cleared with the Director, and recorded in the scholar’s file. No scholar or Upward Bound Staff may dispense over-the-counter drugs, including apsirin, Tylenol, etc. Any scholar judged to be under the influence of unauthorized drugs will be immediately dismissed from the Program.

• No scholar shall possess or consume any form of tobacco or alcohol. Any scholar judged to be under the influence of alcohol will be immediately dismissed from the Program.

• Borrowing without explicit permission of the property owner, or theft of private or public property, will result in immediate dismissal from the Program.

• Possession or use of a dangerous weapon will result in immediate dismissal from the Program.

• Harassment or any other behavior deemed by the Staff to be inappropriate (fighting, cursing, gambling, giving someone the middle finger, physical or verbal abuse, etc.) will be grounds for dismissal from the Program.

• Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are strongly discouraged in Upward Bound. Scholars are encouraged to develop a healthy respect, understanding, and appreciation for the opposite gender. Scholars involved in incidents, conflicts, or physical displays of affection, as a result of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, will be dismissed from the Program. This includes hugging, kissing, and/or holding hands. It is imperative that all Upward Bound scholars keep their hands to themselves. No horseplay between students is permissible and may result in dismissal from the Program.

• A scholar may not have any electrical device/equipment (pagers, cellular phones, electronic games/toys, cassette/cd players, etc.) in classrooms or other campus areas. If you are found with any of these items, your parents/ guardians will be called to pick them up.

• Artificial tattoos that are visible to staff or scholars are not permissible during any Program activity.

• Please leave expensive jewelry at home.

• Willful property damage will be cause for dismissal from the Program.

• Instructional classes will be held on the Lake Michigan College, Napier Campus. Please be considerate and keep noise down when going to and from class or tutoring rooms. Remember, other individuals, students, faculty, and office workers are occupying the building. Scholars must remain in class during class hours.

• Hats or caps will be worn straight and with the front of the cap to the front of the scholar’s head. Hats or caps will not be worn during class or inside the building. No exceptions.

• Food and drink are not allowed at tutoring sessions, unless provided by the Upward Bound staff. No food or drink is allowed during class time unless permitted by Upward Bound staff.

Discipline: You may be referred to the Upward Bound Program Director because of disciplinary issues. You will receive counseling and assistance in correcting your behavior. Three disciplinary referrals may result in your exclusion from Program activities or further participation in the Upward Bound Program. Disciplinary issues are resolved in accordance with the Lake Michigan College Upward Bound Disciplinary Policy.
