UPWARD BOUND
Store

Overview
In the fall of 2001, the LMC Upward Bound Staff conceived the idea for an UB Store and Bucks Program. In an effort to instruct our scholars in responsibility, time management, check cashing skills, banking procedures, money management, work ethics, and business practices, we decided to open the UB Store.

To purchase items from the store, scholars use their UB Bucks, earned through a variety of activities (explained below). The UB Store is stocked with items such as candy, drinks, pens, notebooks, clothing items, books, holiday gifts, jewelry, and a large selection of other goods and products. All store merchandise has been donated by LMC departments, faculty, and staff.

For more information or to donate items,
contact the LMC Upward Bound Staff.

Why do I lose UB Bucks if I don't attend activities, even if the reason is excused?
Upward Bound activities are not optional (except Tuesday Workshops). They are required elements of the Upward Bound Program. By not attending these activities, you are losing out on opportunities to learn and grow, both academically and socially/culturally.

What is meant by parent participation and earned UB Bucks?
The Upward Bound Program is not just about students; it's also about parents/ guardians. Several times throughout the year, parents/guardians are asked to attend workshops, parent meetings, and activities. When your parents/guardians participate, they earn UB Bucks for you, their children.

How do I earn UB Bucks through community service?
Community service is an important part of being a well-rounded and well-educated citizen. Community service is also an important part of the college application process and many scholarships. To earn UB Bucks for your community service, obtain a Community Service Time Sheet from an Upward Bound staff member, keep track of your hours, have the supervisor sign the form, and return the time sheet to the Upward Bound Office. (You will be paid UB Bucks for every five hours of community service you complete.)

How are UB Bucks paid?
THe UB Bucks pay period is approximately once every four to six weeks. You will be issued an UB Check that you will take to the UB Bank to be cashed for UB Bucks.

How do I become an UB employee?
If you are interested in applying for the UB Store Manager, UB Store Assistant Manager, or the UB Banker positions, you will need to submit a completed application to the Upward Bound Office. After reviewing all of the submitted applications, Upward Bound Staff will select those applicants to be interviewed. These applicants will be contacted, an interview time arranged, and an interview conducted at the agreed upon time. From that pool of applicants, the final candidates will be selected and called for a second interview. From this second interview, the new employee will be chosen.

If the UB Store Manager and UB Store Assistant Manager wish to, they may call for applications for the UB Store Clerk. The same process outlined above will be followed, except the UB Store Manager and Assistant Manager will conduct the interviews.

Will other activities/UB Employee positions be considered for UB Bucks?
Yes. Currently, the Upward Bound Staff is reviewing several other activities. These activities include job shadowing, UBSAI, and peer tutoring. The Upward Bound Staff also forsees a possible need at a later date for more UB employee positions. As soon as the Staff has finished evaluating these activities and positions, you will receive an up-dated earnings chart.
