Graduation and Commencement

Lake Michigan College holds commencement ceremonies once a year in the Mendel Center Mainstage on the first Sunday of May. At the commencement ceremony, Lake Michigan College invites family members, faculty, and staff to honor the outstanding efforts demonstrated by graduates in earning their degree or certificate. The 2017 Commencement Ceremony will be held Sunday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are required for entry for family and friends to the Mainstage. See below for more details about applying for graduation, eligibility for commencement, preparing for the ceremony, and what you need to know to walk or attend.

Once you complete the general education and degree requirements for graduation, you will be eligible to apply for the appropriate bachelor's or associate degree from Lake Michigan College. If you complete requirements for a certificate program, you will be eligible to apply for a Level 1 Certificate or Certificate of Achievement. You may graduate at the end of the fall or spring semesters, or summer term, with commencement exercises held annually at the close of the spring semester in early May. Participation in commencement does not mean that you have completed all of the requirements for your degree or certificate.

2017 Grad Fairs

Bertrand Crossing Campus April 3 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Napier Avenue Campus April 5 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Once you purchase your regalia in the bookstore, you will be able to check out with the college's graduation booth at the Grad Fair.

If you did not indicate on your graduation application that you plan to participate in Commencement, but now you would like to participate, please attend a grad fair- there is still room for you! Anyone unable to attend a grad fair may visit the Napier Avenue campus bookstore during regular business hours, after April 5, to get sized for a gown. The deadline to get sized for your gown and pick up your Mainstage Admission Tickets (Graduation Tickets) and invitations is Friday, April 21, 2017.

Required regalia will be available for purchase in the bookstore starting at Grad Fair and continuing up to commencement.

PTK attire is optional for Commencement. If you are a PTK member and would like to wear PTK attire, you can order items for Commencement here. You are more than welcome to purchase any PTK attire below; however, in general most graduates only purchase the stole.

Rehearsal for the commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 5, 2017 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mendel Center Mainstage. Graduates will rehearse lining up and walking across stage, review their graduation details, and receive important reminders for the day of Commencement. Please make it a priority to attend Rehearsal.

A cap decorating station will be available immediately following rehearsal and students are welcome to bring their own decorating materials or use the (limited) materials provided.

Alumni T-Shirt Ordering Information You can order a commemorative t-shirt with the names of all graduates here . The t-shirts will be available to pick up after the commencement ceremony in the Mainstage upper lobby.

Flowers Flowers can be ordered for graduates here. Flowers will be available to pick up after the commencement ceremony in the Mainstage upper lobby.

Commencement Ceremony Location The Mendel Center Mainstage

Tickets, Invitations, and Announcements Commencement participants will receive 4 Tickets and 4 graduation invitations. You will also have the option to purchase announcements. Tickets are for the Mainstage, where the ceremony will take place; a Ticket will be required for entry and seating in the Mainstage. Be sure to bring your tickets. A graduation invitation or announcement cannot be used for admission to the Mainstage. Extra seating will be available in overflow rooms, where guests can watch the commencement ceremony by video feed; a Ticket will not be required for entry into overflow rooms.

Ticket redistribution Any tickets that have not been picked up by the deadline, Friday April 21, will be redistributed on a first-come, first-served basis through the Mendel Center Mainstage Box Office Friday, April 28, starting at 2:00 p.m. Please bring Student ID.

Assembly Location Graduation candidates must arrive in F-104, Grand Upton Hall, before 1:00pm.

Regalia Graduation regalia will be available for purchase in the bookstore starting at Grad Fair and going until commencement.

Parking and admission Please advise your family and friends to arrive early. Doors open at 1:00 pm.

Parking at the Mendel Center is free. Maps and directions to The Mendel Center can be found here. Tickets are required for admission to The Mainstage; please bring your tickets with you. Family seating/accommodations will be made available for families with young children who prefer a little more privacy or do not wish to sit in the mainstage and would still like to view the ceremony on a large screen.

Degree/Certificate Presentation The graduate is called to the stage only once, even if several degrees or certificates are conferred. You will receive only a diploma folder on stage at commencement. Your diploma will be mailed to you approximately 30 days after final grades are posted.

Photographs A photographer from Grad Images will be present at the graduation ceremony to take photos when you walk across the stage to receive your diploma. Special Accommodations If you require special accommodations such as a stage ramp or a hearing amplification system, please call (269) 927-6198 so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Graduate Honors Reception Eligible graduates who have achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher in their studies will be invited to a college-wide Graduate Honors Reception which will be held Monday, April 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Grand Upton Hall. Students who qualify receive an invitation from the Office of the Vice President for Admissions. Invited grads, families and friends must RSVP as tickets are limited. Graduates will receive their honors pins and those earning an Associate degree with a 4.0 GPA will be recognized during the ceremony.

Graduation with Honors Designations Students graduating with a cumulative 3.25 – 4.0 GPA will receive one of the following notations on their Associate's Degree transcript:

Honors 3.25 - 3.74
High Honors 3.75 - 3.99
Highest Honors 4.0

Graduation refers to receiving a degree, diploma or certificate once you have been certified by the College as having met all requirements. After you submit an application for graduation, confirmation is made that all graduation requirements have been met, and that the degree or certificate is noted in the College’s student information system so that it displays on your LMC transcript. Diplomas are printed and mailed after the degree confirmation process is complete, approximately 30 days after the end of the semester.

The Commencement Ceremony is an event. It is an opportunity for students, families, friends and the LMC community to celebrate your academic accomplishments. Participation in the ceremony does not mean that you have graduated. You will not receive your degree or diploma on that day. LMC holds one ceremony each year.
