BENTON HARBOR, MI – Lake Michigan College is offering a week-long “Lake Effect Summer Musical” theatre camp for high school students on its Benton Harbor Campus from July 23 – 27.

Campers will experience an intensive week of theatre production classes and workshops covering stagecraft, theatre tech, vocal and band music, acting and dance. Campers will end the week by performing the hit musical, “In the Heights,” on the Mendel Center Mainstage. Registrants may also participate in Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra’s July 20 production of “In the Heights” at the Shadowland Pavilion on Silver Beach.

The camp is organized by Lake Michigan College Stage Director, Paul Mow, with help from Music Director, Joshua Goines, and Choral Director, James Kraus.

“Lake Michigan College’s 1,500 seat Mainstage is an ideal place for students to learn all aspects of theatre production, from performing on a larger stage and playing in an orchestra pit, to operating a professional light and sound booth,” said Mow.

Mow also co-directed the recent production of “In the Heights” at the South Bend Civic Theatre, which sold out all 15 shows before opening night. The modern storyline surrounds a vibrant Latin American community in New York City on the brink of change. The show’s modern, rhythmic, rap and Latin style music and lyrics were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda of “Hamilton” fame. The production has won four Tony Awards and a Grammy since it hit Broadway in 2008.

“After the incredible success of our South Bend production, we knew this would be a great vehicle for students to develop their talents and explore Latin American culture through Lin-Manuel Miranda’s inestimable music,” said Mow.

The cost of the camp is $100 for the week, or $300 to include food and lodging in LMC’s Beckwith Residence Hall.
