LMC Announcement Regarding George Floyd

On behalf of Dr. Trevor Kubatzke, President, Lake Michigan College and Ms. Debra Johnson, Chair,  Lake Michigan College Board of Trustees

Dear LMC Family,

The horrendous death of George Floyd is just one among countless atrocities committed against people of color in our nation. These are byproducts of ugly and systemic racism that we have allowed to endure for far too long. We share in the outcry of anger and grief expressed in our communities. We hear you. We see you. We stand with you.

Recent events, compounded by a global pandemic and its devastating economic impact are also taking a toll on our campus community. Normally our students, employees and partners would come together for support but this is not a normal time. We will speak up, however, because, as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

This is a devastating time in our history but it is also an opportunity for us to see more clearly, and to lean on LMC’s Guiding Principles of accountability, culture, diversity, integrity, quality and service.

As an institution of learning, we hold great responsibility because education alleviates ignorance. We see hope in each new student who comes to LMC with curiosity and new ideas about what it means to be citizens of the world.

We will take this as an opportunity to continue building bridges with our community partners, to engage in more honest and challenging discussions, and take action that promotes equality for all members of society. We will meet the world as it is and help shape it into what it can be.

We hear you. We see you. We stand with you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Trevor A. Kubatzke
President

Debra Johnson
Chair, Board of Trustees
