Library Help + Services

The William Hessel Library loans materials to the Lake Michigan College community and selected materials to the general public. The Circulation Desk is open during all hours of library operation. For assistance, visit us in person, call (269) 927-8605 or send an email to library@lakemichigancollege.edu

Need a book the library does not carry? Or a magazine/journal article not found in the library databases? You may request items from other libraries. Note that the library does not borrow textbooks.

Search the Online Catalog to request locally held items to be sent to the South Haven or Niles campus. First you will need to log in with your eight digit ID number and your birth date. Upon locating an item, select place hold, and under the reserve a title frame, indicate the campus - South Haven or Niles -  to have your item(s) sent to the respective campus.

Log on to the Online Catalog with your eight digit ID number and your birth date. Under your account name you can renew and also look at your checkout history.

Books (only five out at a time) are loaned for two weeks and DVDs for one week. There is a ten item limit per student.  Longer checkouts are available for LMC staff.

Fines are 25 cents a day, up to $5.00 per item. Borrowers will be charged for lost and/or damaged items. Cost will include replacement fee and processing charge.

Title suggestions are welcome. Please let the library staff know in person or send an email

Course Reserves

Faculty may place material on reserve at any time during a semester.

A reserve request form indicating the instructor’s name, the course the reserve is for, and the circulation limit for the material needs to accompany the materials. The form and reserve item should be sent to the circulation coordinator at the Napier Avenue Campus.

Faculty should obtain copyright approval for any materials not covered under "fair use" guidelines before they place materials on reserve.

Library Instruction

The library staff will provide instruction about its resources to classes. Faculty need to schedule classes at least one week in advance. Instructors are to remain with the class during the library presentation. Students retain more from a library instruction session if it is scheduled at a time when library use is necessary to complete a class assignment. Sessions can be tailored to a specific class assignment.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines plagiarism as: “The action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own; literary theft.”  So how can you avoid plagiarising someone’s work or idea when doing research for papers or speeches? Most instructors will be addressing this issue if you have research assignments. For further information  the library recommends:
