Emily Martindale receives Lake Michigan College’s Spirit of Nursing Award for Spring 2023

Emily Martindale of Stevensville has been named the recipient of Lake Michigan College's Spirit of Nursing Award out of 31 graduating nursing students for the Spring 2023 semester.

"Emily was nominated by multiple classmates and chosen among the nominees by the faculty to receive this award," LMC Nursing Director Denise Gardner said. "One peer said that Emily is 'kind to everyone and always willing to help others.' Another peer noted her 'dedication to nursing and high work ethic.' We are proud to bestow this honor on Emily."

Martindale spent three years as a Nurse Technician in the Medical-Oncology Unit at Corewell Health South (formerly Spectrum Health Lakeland). After graduation, she plans to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical-Surgical Unit at Cottage Health in Santa Barbara, California. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree within the next two years.

Martindale is a 2017 graduate of Lakeshore High School. Before attending LMC, she attended Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California, receiving an associate degree in pre-nursing in December 2020.

"I am extremely honored that my classmates and the nursing faculty would think of me for the Spirit of Nursing Award," Martindale said. "The Spring 2023 nursing graduates are incredible. They are hard-working, inspiring, and the reason I am where I am right now. It has been a pleasure to work alongside them during these two years. I couldn't imagine achieving this without them and their shoulders to lean on."

The LMC nursing faculty awards the Spirit of Nursing honor for the Fall and Spring cohorts. Nursing students eligible for the Spring 2023 award began their nursing course studies in Fall 2021.

Criteria for the award include a caring attitude towards patients and peers, the ability to collaborate in academic and healthcare settings, an attitude of inclusivity, civility, and respect for diversity, a demonstration of integrity and ethics, and a commitment to excellence and leadership.

"The skillful nursing program educators and clinical nursing instructors pushed me to be a better student and nurse," Martindale said. "I want to thank my instructors, especially Mary Jo Risetter, Kathryn Vera, Brian Edgerly, and Mariko Moersch, who have been encouraging, patient, and exemplified the kind of nurse I strive to be one day. Having knowledgeable and compassionate teachers to guide us makes a world of difference. Lake Michigan College has brought countless amazing people into my life, and I have learned so much from every single one of them."
